Business Policies
Operations: Mountain Paws Pet Resort is owned and operated by James Barnett and Diana Weston. They have a combined 30 years of experience working with dogs and cats. They previously owned Small Frys Doggy Daycare in Chilliwack , a beloved facility that was always ready to help with small pets.
Business Hours: Mountain Paws Pet Resort is open Monday thru Friday 7:00am-6:00pm and Saturday/Sunday/Stat Holidays 9am-6pm. Mountain Paws Pet Resort is closed everyday from 1-2pm, allowing our staff a break from their very physically demanding jobs while also allowing dogs a cool down rest period from outdoor play. Late pick ups are available until 7pm on an individual basis and must be pre-arranged. Mountain Paws Pet Resort provides all services 363 days a year, we are closed to the public Christmas Day and New Years Day. For those people that have flights to catch, jobs that start earlier than 7am, Mountain Paws Pet Resort does offer early drop off up to 6am, and late check out up to 7pm. Please inform us when booking that you require these early services.
Facilities: The big dog kennel areas have concrete floors but are equipped with year round HVAC maintaining the inside temperature between 68-72 degrees. The small dog kennels have thick rubber floors and the room is temperature controlled with both heat and air conditioning. EVERY dog is provided with a top of line dog cot (Kuranda bed) which is slightly raised off the floor ensuring your dog’s physical and temperature comfort. Cat condos are equipped with a litter box, window with ledge for sunbathing, and a cot or bed area for comfort.
Emergency Protocol: In the event of a fire alarm, or an evacuation due to wild fires in the area etc, MPPR has a practised fire procedure, posted signs through the shop, and a building wide linked fire alert system. This is practised once a year to ensure readiness. In the event of a staff injury, the front door of the business will be locked until we can ensure the staff member receives treatment, and or taken to hospital. Once that is complete, normal operations will recommence. If there is an evacuation, MPPR staff and guests will be contacted to pick up their pets. Those pets where this is impractical will be housed until they can be removed and the owners will stay on site to ensure their safety.
Emergency Services: Mountain Paws Pet Resort does not provide veterinarian services. In case of an emergency, pets will be brought to the veterinarian listed on their profile (if located in Cranbrook) during business hours by a Mountain Paws Pet Resort employee. If the veterinarian on file is not located in Cranbrook, your pet will be taken to Steeples Vet Clinic. All charges incurred are the responsibility of the pet owner. Mountain Paws Pet Resort is not responsible for injuries that occur as a result of daycare play. It is the expectation of Mountain Paws Pet Resort that your emergency contact is aware of your pet being with us and aware they may be asked to make health decisions for the pet.
2. INTAKE PROCEDURES
Mountain Paws Pet Resort requires an assessment of your dogs character and temperament in order to accept them for care. It is the preference of MPPR that this be performed during a meet and greet visit, but can be performed on the first day of a stay.
All dogs must provide proper documentation of vaccinations. These vaccinations are Rabies, Distemper/Parvo and Bordetella vaccines. The Rabies vaccine is required on all dogs by law and dogs will not be admitted if their Rabies vaccine is expired even by just one day. We reserve the right to deny admission to any dog if their vaccines are not current. Please be aware that the Bordetella vaccine takes several days to be effective, so we recommend that dogs receive their vaccines at least 7 days before their stay. It is your responsibility to bring your dog’s vaccination records from a licensed veterinarian at enrollment and each time your dog’s vaccines are renewed.
All dogs attending and participating in group play should be in overall good health and must be fit to play in an active environment. Dogs that have hearing conditions can be successful in group play, but dogs with vision impairments are generally not comfortable in a group of dogs. If your dog has hip or joint conditions, or other physical conditions, please discuss them with your veterinarian before your dog participates in group play. Please let us know if your dog has any health issues. We can care for many dogs with special health needs, such as special feeding, more frequent bathroom breaks, or mobility issues.
Check-in/Check-Out: For all boarding clients, please allow at least 15 minutes to go over feeding/medication instructions, behavioural or medical issues. Dogs will only be released to the owner or to persons identified prior to pick up by the owner. If we are unsure, you may be asked to provide identification.
Leash: For the safety of our staff, customers, and clients, all dogs are required to enter and exit the facility on-leash. Remember, your dog may be friendly, but we may have other dogs in the lobby that have not been assessed yet. It is also part of the city bylaw that the front desk and parking lot area are considered to be public areas and leash and license laws apply.
Aggressive or Dangerous Dogs: MPPR has a limited capacity to accommodate dogs that do not succeed in a group setting. We have a single space for dogs with aggression issues that we can work with the dog safely. Ask about this if you have a dog that you feel may fit into this category, as there are additional fees and policies to review.
3. FOOD AND MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION
Feeding times for dogs in boarding will be 7:00-8:00am, and 3:00- 4:00PM Dinner is fed earlier than usual for most pets. We require pets that have just eaten a meal to wait in their kennel to digest and settle for a minimum of 60 minutes. This is done to prevent the pets getting bloated and possibly injured as a result. Mountain Paws does supply pet food on request, but we strongly advise that pet parents bring the same food they eat at home. Continuing their own food helps avoid digestion issues that can result from switching food. Please be sure all food is brought in a sealable bag, container or plastic container with a lid. We recommend bringing extra food just in case your travel plans change. You may also want to consider increasing the amount of food that your dog typically eats due to the increased activity level. If your dog runs out of food, we will reach out to you to advise. Extra food can be brought, or we can purchase a bag and add the cost to your tab.We will feed them our house food if we are unable to reach you at a cost of 5$ per day.unless other arrangements are made. Please advise us if your dog has any food allergies and whether we can add enticements to their food if they are not eating.
Medication is only administered according to instructions given at checkout. We are able to accommodate medication times outside of normal business hours ( 3x a day medication for example) but will add a 5$ fee for out of hours services. Mountain Paws Pet Resort does not store, sell, or supply medications of any kind. Plese ensure that you review your med needs thoroughly during check in.
4. CLEANING PROCEDURES OUTSIDE CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
The removal of feces and other body wastes is an ongoing task. As feces are one of the most common ways to become infected with viruses, we target feces aggressively.
INSIDE CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Mountain Paws Pet Resort is proud to use veterinary sanitary products to ensure a clean, safe, healthy environment for our guests. Our Prevail cleaner is one of the best in the industry.
GENERAL CLEANING
We operate a facility that allows pets to run throughout all day. This means that we normally will have small messes from time to time. Each kennel that is used for any dog is fully sanitized each day. For guests that are checking out of an overnight stay, their kennel is fully scrubbed and sanitized. All kennels get cleaned at least once a day.
ICE MELT AND SNOW REMOVAL
Mountain Paws uses a pet friendly no salt de-icer on the property, both in customer walking areas as well as paths, entries and exits to runs and play areas. We leave the snow in the large play parks cuz dogs love it!
GROUP PLAY TIME AND GROUP DIVISIONS
Mountain Paws Pet Resort tries to strike a balance between safety and fun for the pets in our care
The bulk of the day is spent in play groups. Groups are divided mostly based on age, size, and energy levels. Additional consideration is given for temperament, individual requests and special circumstances.
Mountain Paws Pet Resort reserves the right to provide your dog with an individual experience should the need arise, based on temperament, behaviour or state of alter (spayed/neutered).
Mountain Paws Pet Resort has almost 10 defined outdoor play areas to ensure the safety, comfort and security of all pets in our care. These include a half acre wooded forest, a half acre grassed play park with play equipment and a 900 sq foot building for covered/partially heated play during inclement weather.
Payment of Services and Fees
It is our expectation that invoices will be paid at time of pickup. Please speak to the manager or owner during intake if you require alternative arrangements. Mountain Paws Pet Resort reserves the right to hold pets until payments are made, outside of pre-existing arrangements.
7. RESERVATION AND CANCELLATION POLICY
To prevent issues with available space, reservations for all services are encouraged. Walk-ins are accepted for daycare service. Drop-in boardings are accepted if an opening is available. When you make a reservation, you will receive a confirmation via email. If you do not have a reservation with an email confirmation, we may not be able to admit your dog if we do not have availability
Daycare – We strive to accept all pets, however, during peak seasons we may have reached capacity with overnight guests.
It is recommended to prebook your daycare visits, as our booking software will alert you if there are closures.
Boarding – a reservation is highly recommended, especially during our high seasons (March break, July, August, Christmas vacation). We are often at or close to 100% capacity during these periods so it is best to book as early as possible. For stays of 4 days or more Mountain Paws Pet Resort may require a deposit to guarantee your reservation. For reservations of 7 nights or less, 24 hours notice of cancellation is required or a $20 cancellation fee will be assessed. For longer term stays, 72 hours notice is required or half the initial deposit will be retained.
8. ANIMAL BITES/INJURIES
While we pledge to provide a safe, healthy environment for our employees and pets, we do acknowledge that bites and injuries can occur. Mountain Paws Pet Resort staff and owners are Pet First Aid trained. If further care is required, vet care will be provided.Dogs are wild animals, though domesticated, injuries can occur. Mountain Paws Pet Resort takes no responsibility for any injury as a result of dog play. You agree that the benefits of care outweigh this risk.
Risks: While we strive to achieve a safe environment for all dogs, we cannot prevent accidents, injuries, illnesses or changes in behavior. When you bring your dog to Mountain Paws Pet Resort, you accept these risks and you release Mountain Paws Pet Resort and its staff from all liability arising from the occurrence of such events.
While we do our best to supervise all activity, Mountain Paws Pet Resort cannot prevent injuries and accidents 100%. While accidents and injuries can occur at any time, there is a greater risk of an accident or injury if a dog participates in group play. Our group play is well staffed and our supervisors are trained, but they are working with live animals that can be unpredictable. Dogs can sometimes receive puncture wounds or cuts, scratches, broken nails, sore paw pads, sprains or other injuries in group play. You need to be sure that you are comfortable with this prior to choosing group play for your dog. Also, it is important to check over your dog after they have participated in group play, boarding or grooming. While our staff checks over all dogs at least daily, punctures and cuts can sometimes be missed and can sometimes happen without our staff’s awareness. Even a small cut or puncture can become infected or cause more serious issues if not cleaned and properly cared for. It is your responsibility to closely check your dog for any injuries and if you find any, please report them to us so we can determine what may have happened. If your dog is injured by another pet, you may have recourse to the other pet owner for costs.
9. EMPLOYMENT
Mountain Paws Pet Resort is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on age, race, religion or sex. British Columbia Employment Standards require that employers such as dog kennels staff only persons over the age of 16.
Mountain Paws Pet Resort received an award for being an inclusive employer in the Cranbrook community. We believe working with animals can be therapeutic for both the caregivers and the animals in their care. We have employed young people with diverse intellect to try the care for animals as a career opportunity.
Recommended items to bring:
Bedding: We provide bedding for the dogs that are boarding with us. Each dog has their own top of the line Kuranda bed which is raised 3 inches off the floor. This allows air flow in the summer and warmth in the winter.
Toys: Feel free to bring one or two toys if you think it will make your dog more comfortable. Toys will remain in the kennel during daycare play. Mountain Paws Pet Resort is not responsible for toys that are damaged or misplaced.
Please do not bring the following:
Bowls: We have plenty, so it is not necessary to bring a bowl for your dog.
Breakable Items: Please do not bring glass or breakable items.
We do our best to keep close track of everyone’s belongings, but mix ups and other accidents can occur. If you do decide to bring belongings for your dog, make sure that it is not something valuable and be aware that you are bringing them at your own risk. Lost or damaged items will not be replaced.
Other Requirements: Dogs must have been owned by their owners for at least 7 days and may not have had any communicable disease within the thirty days prior to attending unless cleared by a veterinarian. Please keep the safety of others in mind.
Collars/Harnesses: Some collars/harnesses can cause injury or harm during play time. If necessary, we will remove your dog’s collar/harness during open play sessions.
Release of Photos/Video/Webcams: Photos and videos of the dogs or staff may be used on the website, social media, lobby displays or in other marketing material. You consent to our use of your or your dog’s image, likeness and name in such marketing materials. All photos and video images are the property of Mountain Paws Pet Resort. In the event you do not want pictures of your pet to be published, please advise us in writing so we can accommodate this request.
Abandoned Dogs: According to British Columbia property law, Dogs considered abandoned (dogs left for more than 5 days without proper arrangements and payment for such arrangements) will be placed with local rescue groups to find a suitable and loving home. You understand and agree that if you abandon your dog, you may be unable to retrieve possession of your dog and will have no recourse against Mountain Paws Pet Resort.
